My brother-in-law just bought a Diamondback 9mm because his Shield was “too big to carry”. I feel some measure of personal failure because I have not spent enough time training him in CCW. That said, I can’t wait to shoot the little 9.

The shield *is* too big for certain methods of carry. I certainly wouldn’t pocket carry one.
I do carry a DB9 that way though.
In my experience, it is also far more shootable than other small guns, even slightly smaller .380 pistols. The secret to this lies in the extremely low bore axis of the pistol: with a tight grip, the slide will just kiss the web of your hand as it cycles (it takes significantly more than a few mags to do any damage).
